James Cameron is hard at work developing his Avatar sequels, and the only way they can be described is by bringing back long-dead slang terms.  With a December 2016 release date officially set for Avatar 2, Cameron is currently getting ready to begin production on the three sequels back-to-back-to-back, and when asked by Empire about the storylines, Cameron, laughing, said he could reveal one thing: “They’re gonna be bitchin.’  You will shit yourself with your mouth wide open.”  Dear Fox, please print this on the poster.

The filmmaker certainly took his time in crafting the follow-ups to the highest grossing film of all time, and when it came to writing the screenplays he broke the stories with a team of writers and then assigned each of them one specific film.  In the recent edition of Empire, Cameron elaborates a bit on this writing process and reveals that the films will be shot in 48 FPS instead of 60.  Moreover, the director lets slip that one of the most quoted lines from Avatar actually came from Peter Jackson.

Speaking with Empire in the Peter Jackson-edited January issue, Cameron spoke a bit about the writing process for the sequels avatar-james-cameron-2-449x600that involved Josh Friedman (Avatar 2), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Avatar 3), and Shane Salerno (Avatar 4):

“I think we met for seven months and we whiteboarded out every scene in every film together,” Cameron explains, “and I didn’t assign each writer which film they were going to work on until the last day. I knew if I assigned them their scripts ahead of time, they’d tune out every time we were talking about the other movie,” he laughs.

Cameron will no doubt be pushing technological boundaries with these follow-ups, and while he recently said he hadn’t yet figured out how much of the films will be shot in HFR, he tells Empire he’ll be using 48 frames per second instead of 60 FPR:

“My thinking at the time was that 60 [FPS] might be a better segue to the video market. I’ll be plugging into a system that’s a little more mature, so it makes sense for me to do 48 frames at this point.”

And finally, Cameron revealed that one of the lines from Avatar that seems to be quoted most often actually came as a suggestion from Jackson and his writing team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens:

“When Neytiri is holding Jake and she’s just brought him back to consciousness, the ‘I see you’ line was suggested by them,” remembers Cameron. “It might have been Peter who said that.”

Avatar 2 opens in theaters in December 2016, followed by Avatar 3 in December 2017 and Avatar 3 in December 2018.
