Is Fox Developing a Live Action X-MEN Television Series?

Posted on October 6, 2014 at 3:53 pm by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

If you grew up in the 90’s like I did then you undoubtedly loved X-Men: The Animated Series.  It had all the hallmarks of a great kids cartoon, and the massive lineup of the X-Men themselves seemed like the perfect fit for a long-running television series.  As Marvel Studios has now started dipping its toe into the television waters (on network TV with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter and on Netflix with Daredevil), it appears that Fox may be wanting to bring its own Marvel property to the small screen as well.  If a new rumor is to be believed, 20th Century Fox is looking to bring the mutants back to television by way of a new live-action X-Men TV show.

The folks over at Bleeding Cool are reporting that Fox is currently in “deep development” on a live-action X-Men TV show, XMenBOTA1covercropwith interest heating up.  While Bleeding Cool isn’t really a scoop-breaking kind of site, they were the first to report that a Supergirl TV series was on the horizon and that one panned out rather nicely.

If this story is true, it would mark an interesting development for Fox’s X-Men franchise.  The series just enjoyed its biggest feature film entry to date with X-Men: Days of Future Past and there are plenty more X-Men movies to come with X-Men: Apocalypse on tap for release in 2016.  At the same time, the studio is finally moving forward with a Deadpool movie that will be a part of an inter-connected X-Men universe.  Could this X-Men TV show be another cog in the overall plan?  If Fox is looking to turn its ownership of the X-Men property into its own mini comics universe a la the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then moving into television seems like a plausible next step.

And what better property to bring to TV than X-Men?  There are hundreds of mutant characters to choose from, which means the TV series could exist in the same universe as the films without having to address much crossover between the characters.  Again, this report is currently unconfirmed and should thus be treated as a rumor for now, but this is certainly an interesting possibility.  Hopefully we hear more on this front soon.
