INCREDIBLES 2 Release Date Moved Up TOY STORY 4 Delayed

the-incredibles-toy-story-slice-600x200There’s been a pretty big release date shake-up in Pixar-land. Two of the studio’s most high-profile projects are getting a release date swap. The Incredibles 2 will arrive in theaters on June 15, 2018 while Toy Story 4 will move back to June 21, 2019. THR reports that the highly-anticipated sequels are getting the old switcheroo due to an accelerated production schedule on Incredibles 2.

Pixar has been famously reserved when it comes to making sequels, with only a few of their megahits like Cars and Toy Story getting follow-up films. The Incredibles 2 was a long hoped-for, long speculated sequel that was finally announced in March of 2014 — ten years after the original landed in theaters.

Director Brad Bird, who won his first Best Animated Feature Oscar for The Incredibles (and his second for Ratatouille, 3 years later), returns for The Incredibles 2. Oscar-winning composer and Disney regular Michael Giacchino is also set to return for the sequel. When we last heard from Bird about his the-incredibles-movie-image-2progress on the story, he emphasized his desire to find a way to do something new with the superhero genre in an age where it has become a pervasive, driving force of modern cinema.

As for Toy Story 4, John Lasseter is back in the director’s chair. Lasseter took home an Oscar for his achievements on Toy Story and returned to helm Toy Story 2 before letting Lee Unkrich take the wheel for Toy Story 3. Last we heard, the Toy Story 4 script is the animation studio’s first “romantic comedy,” not a direct sequel to the original trilogy, with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack  penning the script based on a story by the Pixar brain trust of Lasseter, Unkrich, Pete Docter, and Andrew Stanton.

Here’s what Lasseter said about the story at last year’s D23 Expo,

As we were looking around we came up with this idea because Bo Peep was not in Toy Story 3, and it actually worked beautifully into this….so Woody and Buzz light-year go out to find Bo Peep and bring her back, and it’s a very special and emotional love story. But it’s extremely funny too.

Next up for Pixar is Cars 3 on June 16,2017 and the Dia De Los Muertos-inspired original project Coco, which lands on November 22, 2017.
