When Gary Ross stepped down as director of the 2nd Hunger Games movie Catching Fire, Francis Lawrence (I am Legend) was tapped to direct.  Today it was announced that Lawrence would direct the 2-part finale of the series, MockingjayThe Hunger Games novels were a trilogy, where the films will follow in other young adult novels Harry Potter and Twilight and break apart the finale into two parts.  Catching Fire will open November 22, 2013. Mockingjay Part 1 is due out on November 21, 2014 and Mockingjay Part 2 is set for November 20, 2015.

Synopsis for Mockingjay (minor Catching Fire spoiler below);

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

It’s good news that the rest of the story will have a unifying vision under Lawrence, but I think that splitting part 3 into two parts seems like a cash grab.  Were you a fan of the novels or the first film?  I really enjoyed the first novel, but thought the 2nd and 3rd books were pretty weak.

      Catching Fire is my favorite. If Lawrence brings it like he did in I Am Legend we're fur a treat.
