Hideo Kojima to Leave Konami

UPDATE: insiders at Kojima Productions have confirmed that Hideo Kojima, along with many other senior developers, will be leaving Konami on April 1, 2015.

Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima will leave Konami following the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. As a result, Kojima Productions will be disbanded and “retired.”

There is no official statement from either Kojima or Konami saying this is one hundred percent official but many sources are saying this is a done deal and happened behind closed doors, Gamespot has noted.

Many reports are saying that a major power struggle between Kojima and Konami has existed for some time and has finally reached boiling point. In addition, many of the senior staff responsible for the MGS franchise are now working as contractors and are working with limited powers. Kojima’s name is also being removed from all branding and promotional tools for MGSV:TPP.

Several sources are coming out citing little differences in the story, but the overall result is the same. This truly is a huge set back for Konami who feature Metal Gear Solid content in their promotions regularly. Kojima has stated recently that he would stop working on MGS titles eventually and turn his attention to smaller titles.

There are no reports about what will happen with the upcoming Silent Hills game or what this means for the future of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Since both are developed under the Konami brand one can assume these projects will stay put with the potential of Silent Hills never being releasedGuillermo del Toro was to collaborate with Kojima to bring the horror franchise to the Playstation 4.

Hideo Kojima, as controversial and rogue as he is, might be one of the most prolific and well known game creators of his time. To let him leave is a bigger deal to Konami and it remains to be seen how they will bounce back from this. Kojima isn’t exactly a person that you can easily replace or duplicate.

Konami does not deserve Kojima. Outside of Kojima’s stuff, I can’t say I have thoroughly enjoyed anything out of Konami in the past ten years.

    • @fake_brasilian:disqus I hope you’re ok with regular EVO Soccer games from Konami, because that is all you will be getting from here on out.
