Jonathan Nolan has another show on the air.  HBO announced today that is has ordered to series Nolan’s adaptation of writer/director Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi film Westworld, which revolved around a malfunctioning Wild West robot at a futuristic adult amusement park.  The official, cryptic logline for this HBO series is as follows:

Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.

Nolan, of course, is the brother of Christopher Nolan and has co-written the screenplays for films like The Dark Knight (yay!) and Interstellar (you suck!), but he also acts as the creator/executive producer of the CBS series Person of Interest and is developing another potential HBO show in the form of an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi series Foundation.

Nolan co-wrote the pilot for Westworld with his wife, Lisa Joy, and also directed the first episode with a fantastic cast led by Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, and Rodrigo Santoro.  It’s unclear how Nolan’s iteration of Westworld will differ from Crichton’s film, but the material should make for an interesting TV series.  Also onboard as executive producers are J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, and Jerry Weintraub.

A timetable isn’t given for Westworld’s debut beyond “2015”, but seeing I imagine it could fill the network’s summer slot now that True Blood is no more, or maybe it’ll go in fall now that True Detective Season 2 doesn’t look like it’ll be ready before winter.
