As a surprising announcement pinned to to end of Microsoft’s Gamescom Press Conference, 343 Industries in association with Sega-owned Creative Assembly (Total War and Alien: Isolation) teased the sequel to Ensemble Studio’s final and well-received console Real-Time Strategy game Halo Wars.

The Halo Wars 2 teaser trailer showed an injured Douglas-047 being dragged along, one of three Spartan-IIs (Red Team) last seen aboard in cryosleep aboard the Spirit of Fire declared lost in space after the events of the first game. The antagonist appears to be a Brute Chieftain and his band of brothers hunting them.

The game will feature a brand new story set in the Halo universe and presumably picks up where the last game left off aboard the ship drifting in space with the entire human crew in stasis until the ship’s AI Serina awakens them to a new threat.

The ongoing Halo: Escalation comic teased the threat as a single Flood form moving about the ship. But with the showcase of at least part of the Covenant’s involvement, it remains uncertain if that is the only threat. Like it’s previous installment, multiplayer will also be featured as well utilizing standard RTS controls and designs.

Halo Wars 2 is slated for release in 2016 on both the Xbox One and Windows 10 simultaneously.
