There were many mixed reactions when FOX announced that it would be producing a Batman TV series called Gotham. Emotions ranged from excitement to confusion when it was released that the series would revolve around the life of a younger Commissioner Gordan (Ben McKenzie), 12 year-old Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova). Fans wondered, how would this work? How is it possible to have a Batman show before the existence of Batman?
Perhaps in anticipation of such questions, FOX created a webpage for the show with a description of the plot.
GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
So what does this mean for Batman fans? Don’t expect too much focus on the young Bruce Wayne, as this show will mainly focus on Gordon’s perspective. This could be an interesting approach, as it will dive deeper into the dynamics of Gotham City and how crime grew to take over the city. Fans can expect appearances from younger villains like The Penguin, who has already been seen in leaked pictures around the Internet.
Gotham has taken advantage of fan excitement for the series, and released several cast photos with descriptions on their Facebook Page.
Here’s the first photo of Detective Harvey Bullock:
He’s described as:
Jim Gordon’s partner and mentor, the rough-around-the-edges Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue – Sons of Anarchy, Vikings, Copper) plays loose with police procedure, but gets results — and he does so with old-school, hard-ass panache
Here’s a picture of a young Selina Kyle:
She’s described as:
Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman (acting newcomer Camren Bicondova) is a teenage orphan who is suspicious and wholly unpredictable. A street thief and skilled pickpocket, she’s dangerous when cornered.
We’re excited to see how Gotham develops, and with all the hype surrounding the project, we will definitely be tuning in when it airs. It might not focus on the beginnings of Batman, but maybe Commissioner Gordan is the hero we deserve.
