GOTHAM Adds 6 More Episodes Despite Producer’s Tight 16 Episode Planning

Fox is staying in the Batman business for the foreseeable future, but it may require some serious tweaking to the currently airing first season.  The network announced today that it has given the prequel series Gotham a full season order, picking up an additional six episodes of the drama to bring the season one total to 22 instead of 16.

Executive producer Danny Cannon at New York Comic-Con was asked what would happen if Fox increased the season order gotham-ben-mckenzie-david-mazouz-600x415from 16, he sounded less than enthusiastic about the prospect:

“We’re aiming at 16 [episodes] right now and we have two other seasons figured out if they care to give us the go ahead.  Once the ball started rolling on all these characters, and Commissioner Gordon’s journey and Bruce Wayne’s journey, once we figured that out we spread it out to fit those 16.  If they were to change the order, we would have an emergency meeting.”

Regardless, Fox no doubt wants to take advantage of Gotham’s popularity by extending its first season—especially in light of low ratings for a lot of the network’s other series.  The show airs on Fox Mondays at 8pm ET/PT, with tonight’s installment poised to introduce Arkham Asylum.
