GOBLINS VS GNOMES Announced as HEARTHSTONE’s First Expansion; Releases in December

Blizzard officially revealed the next expansion pack to Hearthstone during BlizzCon 2014’s opening ceremony. The expansion will be titled Goblins vs. Gnomes and looks like a blast (literally.) Many of the new cards are inspired by these two races and their various oddball inventions.

“These pint-size foes don’t always have the upper hand over the myriad mechanical contraptions they cook up, and the results can be . . . unpredictable.”

There are over 120 new cards in the expansion. At least one of them is a Legendary: Dr. Boom. If you recall, he’s the mad scientist from World of Warcraft: Cataclysm that everyone used as an unofficial target dummy. In Hearthstone, he’s a 7/7 minion that summons two 1/1 Boom Bots that will probably blow up in someone’s face.

The new robots included in Goblins vs. Gnomes are grouped under a new minion type: Mechs. There will be a mixture of neutral and class-specific Mechs. Examples announced today include the Explosive Sheep, a 1/1 minion that hits all other minions for 2 damage on death, and aptly-named Annoy-o-Tron, armed with both a Taunt and Divine Shield. You can check out these cards and more in the gallery below.

Not all of the cards conform to the overall mechanical theme. There will, for example, be plenty of magic abilities for players to add to their repertoire. Velen’s Chosen buffs a minion by +2/+4 and also gives them +1 spell damage.

You can’t actually buy the expansion outright. Unlike previous Curse of Naxxramas, Goblins vs Gnomes doesn’t come with new A.I. bosses for players to fight. Instead, you earn the cards by purchasing specific Goblins vs Gnomes card packs through the in-game shop. They’ll cost the same amount as the normal Expert card packs, which Blizzard will continue to sell.

Goblins vs Gnomes should go live in Hearthstone sometime in December.
