42 (PG-13)

42-posterBrian Helgeland’s historical sports drama/biopic 42 relates the historic 1947 baseball season in which Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) decides to sign the first black major league player, Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman). Though Robinson faces ugly, vicious racism from other clubs, fans, and on occasion his own teammates, Rickey encourages him to not fight back. By following that advice, Robinson allows his remarkable athletic talent to speak for itself, and soon the first-year player becomes one the most popular players on the team, eventually securing the Rookie of the Year award. Christopher Meloni and Hamish Linklater co-star.

Scary Movie 5-PosterThe happily-married parents of a newborn boy seek the assistance of paranormal investigators in ridding their home of evil in this installment of the popular spoof series produced and written by David Zucker (Airplane!, The Naked Gun), and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother). Ballet dancer Jody (Ashley Tisdale) and ape researcher Dan have just become the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy when the spooky happenings in their home start causing problems in the workplace as well. With a mischievous demon making their lives unbearable, the miserable couple plant cameras in every corner of their house, and recruit some supernatural experts to help evict the diabolical imp. Charlie Sheen, Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall, and Katt Williams co-star in this horror spoof also featuring Terry Crews, Molly Shannon, Chris Elliott, and Heather Locklear.

Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) works for the Lucas Clinic — a company that reaps a tidy profit by infecting willing clients with viruses taken from their favorite celebrities. Earning a little extra cash on the side by using his own body to smuggle out popular microbes, Syd finds himself in mortal danger after he infects himself with a pathogen taken from Hannah Geist (Sarah Gadon) — a gorgeous superstar who later dies as a result of her illness. Now, it’s only a matter of time before Syd succumbs to a similarly gruesome fate. When Syd’s shady clients and a rival company discover he’s carrying a bug that could revolutionize the industry, he must fight back with the only weapon he has — his own virulent blood.

His marriage dissolving before his very eyes, a former marine (Skarsgård) ruins his credit by gambling online as his wife (Paula Patton) strikes up an intimate relationship on a popular social-networking site. When identity theft puts their lives savings at risk, the couple track down the man (Michael Nyqvist) they believe is responsible for the crime. Meanwhile, an introverted teenage goth (Jonah Bobo) becomes the victim of a humiliating prank when his two biggest tormentors pose as the girl he likes, and trick him into exposing his true identity online. When the prank leads to tragedy, the young victim’s mother (Davis) is overwhelmed by grief as her husband (Bateman) explodes with rage. Later, an ambitious TV reporter’s quest to expose an online prostitution racket has unexpected repercussions for the frightened young man at the center of the growing controversy.

fists-posterThree amateur brawlers with a long history together compete in a televised fighting contest with a $200,000 top prize in this rock ’em sock’ em action flick from South Korea. 25 years ago, Deok-kyu, Jae-seok and Sang-hoon were the most fearsome fighters in their high school. These days former, one-time Olympic hopeful Deok-kyu struggles to keep his noodle shop afloat as Jay-seok runs with a low-level street gang and Sang-hoon bides his time in a boardroom, lamenting the lack of excitement in his life. Upon learning of a new television show that offers former street fighters a shot at some serious money, all three race to get back in shape, and claim the big cash prize.
