Flashback Friday: Fright Night (1985)

The 1980s were a fantastic time for horror movies, or so I can imagine. Unfortunately, I am not old enough to have experienced the genre’s golden era first hand, but I can glean that it was an extremely exciting time for horror fans.

The 80s spawned some irrefutable classics– among them are The Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, which as you know, are some of the biggest titles in horror. However, there are a handful of films that weren’t as celebrated as they perhaps should have been.

One of those films is Tom Holland’s 1985 masterpiece, Fright Night.

The plot is relatively simple: Charley Brewster, his girlfriend Amy, and his pesky friend Ed are terrorized by their new vampire neighbor, the ever-dapper Jerry Dandrige. Obviously alarmed, Charley alerts his mother of his suspicions. Of course, she simply writes him off, and refrains to take him seriously. Of course, Charley was exactly right about Mr. Dandrige’s thirst for human blood, and his mother and the entire town are about to find out the hard way. In order to stop Jerry from devouring his friends and family, Charley enlists the help of Hollywood vampire slayer Peter Vincent.  Of course, nothing goes as planned, and chaos ensues.

Fright Night has all the bells and whistles that makes 80s horror so unique. Its unique mix of classic horror elements, special effects and gore, plus signature comedic timing and camp make it an enjoyable experience for nearly every horror fan. Just try to watch this movie and not swoon over vampire Jerry, or cheer when a certain annoying sidekick comes over to the dark side.

You're So Cool...

“You’re so cool, Brewster!”

If you’re one of the unlucky few who have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie, please do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as possible. If you like it, which you will, watch the 2011 remake just to further prove that the original is truly special.
