Universal Pictures has released the first Jem and the Holograms trailer for director Jon M. Chu’s (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) feature film adaptation of the popular 80s cartoon. The musical adventure stars Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica, a shy girl who must take on the musical alter-ego of “Jem” to take care of her family and friends/bandmates, which includes Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Aurora Perrineau as Shana.

Chu, who also directed the Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never, has very deftly found a way to make this campy cartoon relevant for today’s generation of teens, but that may be off-putting for grown fans of the original show. There’s an earnestness to the tone that I wasn’t expecting, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It feels a bit more Step Up than Pitch Perfect, and while I was hoping this would be more like the criminally underrated Josie and the Pussycats, I’m more than willing to give it a fair shot. It could be fun! Also interesting: this is a Blumhouse production.

Watch the first Jem and the Holograms trailer below, which originally debuted on Buzzfeed. The film also stars Molly Ringwald, Ryan Guzman, and Juliette Lewis. Jem and the Holograms opens in theaters on October 23rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jem and the Holograms:

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.
