First Trailer for EDGE OF TOMORROW Starring Tom Cruise

Warner Bros. just released the first trailer for director Doug Liman’s sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow.  The film stars Tom Cruise as a military officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race.  He wakes up and is forced to relive the day over and over again, but it allows him to become a better soldier and perhaps change his fate thanks to the help of a fellow officer played by Emily Blunt.  The movie is what Groundhog Day would be like if Johnny Rico replaced Bill Murray, and judging by this first trailer Liman looks to have put together an intense and thrilling spin on a fascinating premise.  Though there are obviously plenty of CGI effects involved, the aesthetic has a more grounded and realistic nature to it, which is encouraging.  Moreover, it’s great to see a female lead that’s much more than a damsel in distress or simple love interest.

The film also stars Bill Paxton, Laura Pulver, and Jeremy Piven.  Edge of Tomorrow opens on June 6, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Edge of Tomorrow:

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

So I found out this is an adaptation of a Japanese light novel called “All You Need Is Kill”. WB got the rights and everything to make it. Bought the Kindle version and am reading it on my iphone right now.

Yeah, it went into production under the original name, but for whatever reason changed it a couple months ago.
