Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for the original sci-fi drama Passengers. Scripted by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), the film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt and takes place on a luxury spaceship bound for a human colony that’s 120 years away. Given the length of the journey, the 5,000 passengers are put into hypersleep, but when two of the passengers are mysteriously awakened 90 years too early, they strike up a relationship and quickly become the ship’s only hope of recovering from a serious malfunction.
I’ll tell you up front: this trailer shows a lot. Pretty much the entire movie, it seems, which is weird because a sci-fi love story starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt kinda sells itself. Alas, for some reason Sony went full-throttle with this thing and it leaves very little by way of discovery when the film finally hits theaters.
Regardless, Spaihts’ script for Passengers has been making the rounds for years and is apparently pretty terrific, so this is certainly one of the most anticipated films of the year. The set design is gorgeous, as is the cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Brokeback Mountain, The Wolf of Wall Street), and given the popularity of the two leads, I imagine this is gonna be a huge hit for Sony this holiday season.

Here’s the official synopsis for Passengers:

As Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) face living the rest of their lives on board, with every luxury they could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… until they discover the ship is in grave danger. With the lives of 5000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all.
