First Image of Paul Reubens as Penguin’s Father from GOTHAM

While having been involved in television for years, including appearances in shows like The Blacklist and Murphy Brown, Paul Reubens will always be associated with the character Pee-wee Herman. And though this may hurt his authenticity in the eyes of the audience when he plays other roles, it is a testament to his skills that he created such a memorable character (even if one thinks the character is memorable for being annoying rather than funny).

Perhaps that will change soon, as Reubens is taking on a high-profile role in yet another network show. The actor will be be playing the father of Robin Lord Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot, AKA the Penguin, in the upcoming season of the Fox series Gotham. It is quite poetic, actually, as the actor played the very same part for his fellow Pee-wee’s Big Adventure collaborator Tim Burton in Batman Returns.

Gotham executive producer and director Danny Cannon (Nikita) tweeted a picture of father and son to commemorate the show’s return to New York City for shooting, giving us our first look of the actor in the role. Check it out below:

While there’s not too much to see, it is clear that Reubens certainly doesn’t look like Pee-wee Herman. And to give you some comparison, here is what Reubens looked like in the very same role for the 1992 film:

Gotham returns to Fox Monday, February 29th, at 8:00pm ET.
