First Image from Pixar’s LAVA; The Short Will Play Before INSIDE OUT

2014 will be the first year without a new feature film release from Pixar Studios since 2005. The Good Dinosaur was set for May 2014 release before creative struggles forced it to be delayed, but the studio is still taking the time to tout its 2015 releases.  We’ve been hearing a lot about Pixar’s excellent-sounding Inside Out, which opens next summer, and now the studio is teasing its next short film, Lava.  The “musical love story” revolves around two anthropomorphic volcanoes, and the first Lava image released today teases the lead character of Uku.  Who would have guessed that an anthropomorphic mountains could be so cute, and Pixar has a track record of churning out unique shorts with a solid degree of success so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the seven-minute film in full.

Directed by James Ford Murphy, the short will premiere at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan in August and will play in front of Inside Out in theaters starting June 19, 2015.

Here’s the official synopsis for Lava:

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “LAVA” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.
