20th Century Fox has released the first clip for The Martian. Based off of Andy Weir‘s best-selling novel of the same name, Ridley Scott‘s highly-anticipated sci-fi film follows Matt Damon as Mark Wattney, an astronaut stranded alone on mars in the aftermath of a disastrous evacuation. With only the remaining supplies, his scientific genius and a good sense of humor to subsist on, Wattney must find a “science the shit out of this” to survive on the red planet and find a way home.

The Martian will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month before arriving in theaters nationwide on October 2nd. The movie also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover. Watch the new clip for yourself below.

This is a solid clip. It’s tense, well-acted and establishes the visual style of the film, but it’s also kind of a strange choice for a first clip release, since it drops the viewer right in the action (and an onslaught of scientific jargon) with little to no understanding of the characters or circumstance. If you’re worried about spoilers, don’t be, this is the inciting incident of the tale, and happens pretty straight off, but it’s still a little strange without context.

I appreciate that this is a different kind of science fiction for Scott, without deep space travel, action, or aliens. Rather, The Martian is based on very realistic science (NASA hopes to send astronauts to Mars by 2020), and is at heart a character study of a man under the most remarkable circumstances. After his sci-fi swing-and-miss with 2012’s Prometheus, I’m crossing my all my fingers and toes that Scott knocks it out of the park this time.

Here’s the official The Martian synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.
