Firefly: 10 years later

Posted on July 14, 2012 at 6:53 pm by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

Hi everyone, Geek Legacy reporting live from Comic-Con. We just finished attending the Firefly 10th anniversary press event, and it was like Beatlemania in San Diego.

It reunited creator Joss Whedon with almost the entire cast. There was Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Sean Maher (Simon), and Summer Glau (River). When the cast entered, the noisy media room went extremely silent and the mood was one of wonder. Not until Adam Baldwin cracked, “It’s okay to cheer,” did the crowd erupt and give them the ovation they deserved.

It’s been 10 years since our intrepid crew last lived in the world of television, and fans of the show continue to clamor for the show’s return. I’d love to tell you that this was the press conference where they announced they would be returning to the small screen and bringing the old Serenity out of moth balls…

… This however was not that press conference. The group assembled to film a series of interviews and retrospectives that will comprise a 10th anniversary special to air on the Science channel–the same channel that currently airs Firefly in re-runs. They gave us a few fun tidbits, though, such as Dark Horse’s plans to publish comics set after Serenity. Dark Horse also promises to release new content on a more regular basis, trying to avoid repeating the 3 year gap in between past series.

A running theme throughout the conference was not only how the show has affected the fans, but the cast and crew as well. It was clear that the cast believes that Firefly was one of their greatest projects; and though they are saddened by its short run, they’re endeared by their fans’ devotion and love for a space captain and his gang.
