Experiencing the Walking Dead Escape

Do you love adventure, danger, Comic-Con and NOT being undead? Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to chew on humans while infecting them with your deadly “Walker” infection! Well, have we got the event for you! Robert Kirkman’s Skybound brings The Walking Dead Escape, an immersive zombie obstacle course experience. In this, you’ll get the chance to survive… or not…

Introduced originally in 2012 at San Diego’s Petco Park, it was so successful that it was expanded with three additional events in 2013, including incorporating an aircraft carrier in New York. This year, the event has gone on a national tour and comes back to San Diego just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con.

It will be at Petco Park on July 25th and 26th and fans will get an opportunity to participate as either “Walkers” or “Survivors” and will have to climb, crawl, and wiggle their way through various infected evacuation zones. The Walking Dead series creator and executive producer, Robert Kirkman, says “I’m thrilled to offer fans new and old an even bigger, more interactive experience this time around. It’s great to see fans of the comic book and television series live in the world I created so many years ago”.

As a “Survivor”, if you make it into the decontamination zone, you will have your level of infection assessed and then have the ability to participate in the event’s Fan Experience. If you are hoping to participate as a Walker, then you will be transformed by professional makeup artists and receive some zombie training prior to being released on the course. Because, of course, nobody likes newbie zombies!

The great thing is that since this is an immersive obstacle course, and not in any way designed to be a race, everyone who wants to participate can do so. It is designed to be accessible to all so there is no running required and it is not timed.

As someone who has recently participated in a couple of immersive escape room games, I have to say that if you’re a fan of the show or comics and you enjoy running for your life in a fun way, this experience is definitely going to be worth it. In an immersive escape room game, you’re locked in a room with 11 teammates and a couple of “ghosts,” who are basically proctors that ensure you don’t do anything to damage their equipment or yourself, and will sometimes provide clues at key points throughout the experience. Your job is to solve the clues and get the key that unlocks the door, and you have to exit the room by the time allotted, usually about an hour.

The latest game I went to was in Los Angeles and it actually had a zombie chained to the wall, and every so often, the chain was extended, which gave the zombie more access to the room, meaning it could reach more of the clues and items you needed to escape, so we had to use our wits to get around that fact. Once you are caught by the zombie, you’re “dead” and only allowed to participate in an advisory capacity from your death spot. Solving puzzles and looking for clues is all well and good, but having an obstacle that can think and move (even if in a limited zombie capacity), gave the experience an entirely new level.

Every year, more and more activities are taking place in the areas surrounding Comic-Con. This means that even if you aren’t able to get tickets to the Con itself, you can still have a great time downtown and have an off-Con nerd experience! This event, while taking place at the same time as the SDCC, does not require that you have tickets to the Con itself in order to participate. So if you want to join the fun, but couldn’t get SDCC tickets, today could be your lucky day!
