“Escape Mode” Added to Aliens: Colonial Marines

On August 30, 2012, Sega announced “Escape Mode,” the new multiplayer mode for their upcoming release, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Players, myself included, got a chance to see this exciting new feature first hand at PAX Prime, in Seattle.

In Escape Mode, a four person team of Colonial Marines squares off against the opposing team of nasty Xenomorph aliens. The team of Marines must work together to reach a series of checkpoints to clear the map successfully before time runs out. As a Marine, if a member of your team goes down, you have a just a few short seconds to revive them back to life. Otherwise, they will die and your team will have to wait until they reach the next checkpoint to bring them back. Sounds simple enough, right?

At PAX, we played as the Colonial Marines, and the game’s developers played as the Xenomorphs. We kept a constant stream of communication with each other. I gave strict orders to stay together and not to wonder off. As humans, we are easy prey to the darn dirty aliens. Safety in numbers is always a good rule to follow. One playing tip I offered to my teammates was to use the shotgun. We learned at E3 the shotgun was the way to go. The assault rifle is nice, if you like the sound of bullets drowning out your screams as you’re ripped apart.

We moved to each checkpoint with relative ease, blasting aliens in the face and watching their heads explode. We didn’t lose a single teammate at either the first two checkpoints. However, by the time we made it to the third checkpoint, shotgun ammo was getting scarce, and at least three of us had been revived once. Sadly, we didn’t make it to the end of the level. As our teammates started to fall, we became separated by fear. One Marine took off like he heard the dinner bell, only he was the one on the menu. As I lay mortally wounded, waiting to die, I could see my teammates being ripped to shreds. All I could do was fire my pistol at the aliens, and I missed nearly every shot.

We Geek Legacy boys won our first team death match against the developers at E3 last June. Perhaps, at PAX they short changed us on ammo so we would meet certain death. Either way, we had a blast and I’m certainly looking forward to its release.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is scheduled to release on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on February 12, 2013

Super fun game. It was a bit of an 'edge-of-your-seat' game. Can't wait for this one to come out.
