Emile Hirsch Set to Play John Belushi in a Biopic About the Comic Icon.

Variety is reporting that Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer) has landed the lead role in Steve Conrad’s untitled John Belushi biopic.  We reported that a number of actors were in the mix recently, and it looks like Hirsch edged the rest out.  Adapted from the Judith Belushi Pisano and Tanner Colby book, “Belushi,” Conrad will direct from his own script.  High points of Belushi’s career will be explored, including roles in The Blues Brothers, Animal House, and  Saturday Night Live, up to his death at age 33 from an overdose of a mixture of cocaine and heroin at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. The film will begin filming in New York next spring.

Conrad’s next written effort, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, will be seen on screens this Christmas.  Hirsch next appears in the TV mini-series, Bonnie and Clyde, followed byPeter Berg’s Lone Survivor debuting early next year. I am a huge fan of Belushi, and hope that Hirsch packs on a little weight before tackling the comedic icon. Hirsch though has a proven track record, and I have little doubt that he will be able to pull off this difficult role.
