Eek, New Kindle Fire Comes With Ads

Posted on September 6, 2012 at 6:09 pm by Justin Cavender

Earlier I said I was hard pressed to find anything wrong with Amazon’s new tablet, the Kindle Fire HD. It turns out I spoke too soon. According to Amazon’s press release, all Kindle Fires will feature special offers that appear on a lock screen.

Special Offers

The new Kindle Fire family comes with special offers that appear on the lock screen. Examples of special money-saving offers that customers will enjoy include a $5 credit in the Amazon MP3 Store and a $5credit for select titles in the Amazon Instant Video Store. Customers will also receive special offers and screensavers from brands like AT&T, Discover and Intel, such as a special offer of a $10 Gift Card when a customer uses their Discover card to purchase a digital product on Amazon.

Sadly, there is no mention of Amazon selling the new Kindle Fire HD without ads. I’m curious to see if this business practice will change either before or shortly after its release. The Kindle eReader with special offers and sponsored screen savers is listed on for $69. However, if customers want the eReader without ads, the selling price is bumped up to $89.

So what do you think? Would you still consider buying this tablet even though it comes with Ads? I guess it all depends on how much they get in the way.

Too many ads! I wouldn't be able to do it.
