E3 Exclusive: Sonic Boom

Gamers are upset over Sonic Boom, SEGA’s latest offering from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.  It’s part of a three part, super-ultra cash grab SEGA has put together involving this game, a television show, and a feature film.  That being said, this game has very little in common with any other games from the franchise, and I think that’s a good thing. The game combines heavy platforming elements, along with the fun, fast gameplay we’d all expect from a Sonic the Hedgehog game. So why is everyone so pissed off? Is it because the game doesn’t play as well as Sonic 3? Of is it because gamers fear a change in Sonic’s direction in the same way my Grandmother is afraid of Email and Facebook?

I had the pleasure of playing an alpha build of Sonic Boom at E3 and I will tell you this, the kids are going to eat this thing up, the gameplay is fairly simple, and any veteran gamer will be able to easily navigate any of the game’s levels. Each of Sonic’s companions have their own particular set of skills, which provide for some fun options and exploration of the platforming stages. You can speed through them, walloping enemies with Sonic’s spin dash attack, gracefully traverse balance beams with Amy, or smash everything you see with Knuckles..who has obviously been injecting himself with some type of bull testosterone.

The most notable difference in the game is the story! It’s actually well written! The characters are fleshed out! Amy is much more than a whining pink fuzzball! The script is funny, light, and immersive. Hearing Sonic and Knuckles make fun of each other while traversing the levels, broke up some of the monotony of the games simple puzzles and I can’t wait to hear the rest of it.

Sonic Boom is the future of the franchise, you heard it here. It may not be the best game for you. It may not be, in your opinion, the best game in the franchise…but you know what? You have outgrown Sonic as much as Angry Old ManSonic has outgrown his audience. It’s time to let go. Sonic Boom gives young gamers a chance to fall in love with Sonic the Hedgehog in the same way we all did when we were growing up. Maybe it’s time for us to start enjoying and embracing this new generation instead of shitting all over it like old men.

Sonic Boom has yet to receive a release date, but will be heading to the WiiU and 3DS soon!
