DOOM Customization Options and Multiplayer Progression Revealed

Posted on April 14, 2016 at 1:05 pm by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

With the release date quickly approaching, Bethesda is starting to pull back the curtain even more on the upcoming shooter DOOM. The title recently finished off a successful closed beta, giving select players the chance to go hands-on with the arena-style multiplayer mode and get a better feel for how this modern take on the classic franchise feels. To give players an even greater sneak peak, Bethesda posted a new trailer teasing fans just how much stuff they’ll be unlocking and customizing during their multiplayer career.

Like most modern day multiplayer shooters, DOOM features a player progression system allowing players to earn experience and level up the more they play. Reaching new levels will unlock new items and gear for the player, from armor items, weapons, taunts, equipment, and playable demons. HACK modules, which function similarly to burn cards in Titanfall, can also be unlocked through player progression – with the trailer revealing a select few like Vital Signs and Supply Timer.

To help players stand out from one another, developer id Software embraced customization, giving players access to a vast array of colors and patterns for weapons and armor. Detail-oriented players can then modify their gear further, such as their armor. Not only changing the type of armor being worn through a number things such as primary and secondary colors, but adding additional details like dirt, scratches, and even patterns that appear on the padding.

These options go even further, as colors can also be changed into one of three types, either Matte, Glossy, or Metallic, and players have the option to increase the color intensity and make the weapon appear pristine or worn down. In the end, these extensive customization options ensure that no two players will look exactly alike and should keep the community playing in an effort to unlock new patterns and colors.

For players still on the fence about the fast-paced and gory shooter, Bethesda is holding an open beta starting tomorrow through the weekend. As previously seen in the closed beta a couple weeks ago, players will have access to multiplayer-only modes Team Deathmatch and DOOM’s unique take on King of the Hill called Warpath. The two maps, Heatwave and Inferno, will also be available along with the loadout longtime fans expect with weapons like the super shotgun, rocket launcher, and lightning gun to name a few.

DOOM launches May 13, 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
