Disney Shutting Down LucasArts

Posted on April 3, 2013 at 10:48 am by Stephen Janes

Disney has announced they are shutting down their LucasArts division, effectively laying off numerous employees and canceling all current games under the branch. No word on exactly why the move was made.

Among the estimated 150 people losing their jobs, highly anticipated titles such as Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault have been canned as well. There were even rumors that the success of First Assault could have led to a reboot in the Star Wars Battlefront franchise, although we won’t be seeing that anytime soon.

Ever since LucasArts was acquired by Disney, a representative mentioned that, “for the time being, all projects are business as usual,” but not a whole lot was seen or heard from since then.

LucasArts was known for producing great PC games in the early nineties, establishing as a stronghold for many childhoods. Titles such as Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and more will never be forgotten, but nobody knows what will happen to these franchises now.

A sad day in the video game industry, indeed. What are your favorite LucasArts memories, Geeks? I remember Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and loved every second of it.

Monkey Island is one of the very first games that I really got addicted to. I'm happy we got their HD remake before this happened. Fate of Atlantis for the record should have served as Indy 4. Great games all around, a sad day indeed.
