Disney Infinity to be Discontinued; Avalanche Software to Close

Shocking news out of Disney Interactive, as they’ve just announced ending it’s popular Disney Infinity game and collectible figures series by next month. John Blackburn, Senior VP and General Manager posted about it earlier today on the Disney Interactive site. Also noted was the shuttering of Avalanche Software, the developer for the game by June.

Disney noted that they are transitioning focus from a self-published basis and will, going forward, license out their brand to other publishers. Earlier this year, they stated that there would not be a new installment of Disney Infinity for 2016.

Notable for it’s niche of including Disney franchises in an interactive game format, the game strove to blend the physical collectible merchandise with the digital interactive aspect that other companies found success with in Skylanders, Amiibos, and Lego Dimensions.

The original Disney Infinity game came out back in August 2013 and has brought with it two sequels and a slew of characters from Toy Story, Frozen, Pirates of the Carribean, The Lone Ranger, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and most recently Star Wars.

Disney Infinity will have two more “waves” of characters and playsets slated for release in association with the upcoming Disney films: Finding Dory and Alice Through The Looking Glass.
