Well, I guess this was bound to happen at some point. According to THR, Disney is remaking the 1992 hit Sister Act. The studio has recruited Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, the duo behind Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, to pen the script. Cinderella’s Alli Shearmur is on board to produce as well. Yes, we need more original content out there, but it’s hard to scoff at this one when I grew up watching and re-watching my Sister Act on HBO more times than I care to admit.

The original film centers on Whoopi Goldberg’s Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who walks in on her mobster boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) while he’s busy executing someone. She runs off to the cops and is placed in witness protection at a convent where she’s expected to lay low by posing as Sister Mary Clarence. However, keeping a low profile isn’t really Deloris’ thing so while there, she keeps busy by turning the convent’s subpar choir into a local sensation.

THR’s headline calls the new Sister Act a “remake,” but in the body of the article it’s dubbed “a new installment,” so it’s a little unclear where Disney is going with this one. Apparently plot details are being kept top secret, but it’s hard to imagine a Sister Act movie without Goldberg in it in some capacity. However, if this is a straight remake, whoever snags that lead role is going to have her hands full. The film definitely wouldn’t be the same without Goldberg’s comedic timing and charisma. Right now it’s unclear whether or not Goldberg will be involved in the film.
