About Last Night: Dexter Season 7 Episode 2 “Sunshine and Frosty Swirl”

Posted on October 8, 2012 at 12:03 pm by Jeff Mueller

Much like Deb, I don’t know how to feel about Dexter at the moment.

Dexter Season 7On one hand we continue down the path of wrapping up a lot of loose ends that are over-due; the fact La Guerta never truly believed Doakes was the Bay Harbor Butcher, final clarity on the hand from the Ice Truck Killer evidence, and starting to close the Lewis harassment/stalking storyline (although I still think there is a lot to come with it, at least we know it can’t just fall to the wayside like so many other side plots over the years). Those are all, without a doubt, good things that need to happen. On the other side of the coin though we have this very odd plan of Deb’s to watch over Dexter 24×7 in some sort of serial killer home detox plan. I just can’t get my head around how far fetched this is… just last week, I praised Jennifer Lawrence’s ability to sell Deb no matter what was on the written page but this week even she couldn’t pull it off. Maybe it is just me but she seemed to come around so fast, seemingly okay with the myriad of murders Dexter has committed after what? A day or two? Then everything seems like business as usual?!?

Maybe Deb’s reactions, and plan to rehab her brother, make sense in the context of just how messed up the situation really is? It is hard to even begin to imagine how someone would react or deal with the revelation that not only was their brother a serial killer but that their father, who they worshipped, trained him! I am going ignore my raised eyebrow for another week or two and see how it all pans out; who knows, maybe this will all be recognized as a illogical, knee jerk reaction to something that no sane person could get their head around quickly? I can only hope that Deb struggles with this a lot more.

Leaving that aside, the episode had some solid moments. There were some much needed Masuka scenes, which were all to rare last season, to add some levity to the material and some really solid screen-time for Ray Stevenson as this season’s villain. I thought he did a spectacular job building the menace of the character (a calmly ominous presence and then OMGWTFScrewdriver!!!) while starting to reveal what is going on with the Ukranian mob connections. I wasn’t particularly excited about this global crime syndicate plotline at first, but it has piqued my interest now and I am curious how it is going to play out (specifically what the deal is with that bracelet that Dexter dumped overboard with the body in Episode 1).

Most interesting to me was how Dexter characterized how his desire to make a kill builds within him. The character is always portrayed as calculating, with flashes of rage, so it was nice to get an inward glimpse of his compulsion in his own words. Sometimes it is easy to lose track of how damaged and complex a characterDexter is as we get involved in the plot, side-characters and rooting for the sweet kills, so it was good to bring the focus back.

All in all I am moving forward into this season hoping for some twisting of the Deb-Dexter dynamic, a resolution to the Lewis situation and for a second Mack truck kill involving La Guerta.

What about you? Where are you wanting the show to go? We want to know!

I wish Dexter would eliminate Lewis and La Guerta. I know for a fact that La Guerta has a very different fate from the books and Deb takes her discovery of Dexter's true self a little different as well, so maybe those story lines will start to unfold?

      Also, Yvonne Strahovski. Yes!

I am curious what they are going to do with the Lewis storyline… but I have hated La Guerta since day one. I try not to be critical, but I just don't think much of Lauren Velez as an actress.

This is my personal input, but I feel as though the Lewis storyline will be similar to Doakes' investigation of Dexter, where they have their run-ins and the constant cat and mouse game becomes a regular occurrence.

I feel as though La Guerta will try to prove her friends innocence but somehow end up losing her rank and job due to her crazed manhunt for the real BHB.

          • Lewis has got to go. He's such a lame-o. La Guerta drives me nutso. Remember when she blamed Debra on the failed raid in the club? Grrrr I was so mad. Not a fan of her character one bit.

This season is shaping up nicely. Dexter will have his hands full dealing with Deb, Lewis, those mob guys, and the BHB case reopening. Oh let's not forget Yvonne Strahovski's character, Hannah. I think she shows up in the next episode.
