Dexter: “Dress Code” Review

Dexter Season 8

Seven episodes down, five to go!

We start right off where the last episode ended, with Dexter being jarred back into consciousness by his cell phone… immediately I got a little concerned wondering where Deb was, considering last season’s animosity between her and Hannah, and I was imagining all the messed up ways this could start.

Instead I was treated to one of the stupidest lines of dialogue I’ve heard in a long time; Dr. Vogel’s ever emotionless voice uttering the gem “… Zach Hamiliton called, I’m so glad you decided not to kill him Dexter” over the phone.

Seriously? Ugh.

“If Hannah poisoned us, why didn’t she kill us?” – Dexter Morgan

That was a question I was asking for the first half of the episode as well.

Deb immediately tells Dexter she doesn’t want to deal with this and she wants Hannah gone, and as much as I know a lot of people will take issue with it but I kind of agree. As fun as her story arc was last season and as nice as Yvonne Strahovski works as eye candy (and holy crap she looked amazing) I just feel like we are throwing way too much into what needs to be a very tightly focused final few episodes. Of course this may end up being the ingredient to the perfect ending but if that’s the end game why are we just getting to this very rushed re-introduction of her?

I’m just not sold on her return yet; and the extremely short-lived Warlock character and his ultra cliche black suit wearing goons? Come on.

I am trying not to be too critical but Dexter learning that Hannah was back in town to ask him to kill her new husband, Miles? Because once again she was in over her head? And Miles, a violent control freak, knows not only about her past but knew at least part of the story with Dexter? Overly convenient if you ask me.

I will say this though, I got a chuckle out of Zach’s reaction to finding out Hannah is Dexter’s ex-girlfriend.

I guess if I am looking for a silver-lining it’s that they didn’t drag this out for longer than one episode.

Dexter - Dress Code
This episode was pretty light on Deborah Morgan, which was probably a good choice but what we got moved her story along I thought. While I still have hope Deb will end up with Jake Elway as some sort of happy ending, I’d be okay if tonight’s ass-chewing was the end of that potential road. Don’t get me wrong, I love Deb because she is so irreverent and ballsy but it makes sense that someone called Deb on her shitty attitude. Honestly, it’s a wonder anyone would keep her employed.

“Trust me, Dexter is not a mystery you want to solve.” – Deborah Morgan

This leaves us with the Zach Hamilton storyline.

Until this episode came to a close I was continually saying to myself “Please dear lord, don’t set Zach Hamilton up as some sort of successor to Dexter. Please.” I could not have thought of a crappier ending to this great series and luckily by the end of tonight it seems as though at least two possible endings can be crossed off the list. Zach won’t become the new Dexter, and Dexter will not end up with the “normal” girl next door.

In the middle of Dexter and Zach is Evelyn Vogel. She started this mess off by telling Dexter that she saw potential in the youth, ultimately saving him from Dexter’s table. Here we are though, with her trying explaining that Zach might not be able to curb his instinct for killing because he’s much older than Dexter was when he learned the code. No crap. Not to mention the fact that unlike Dexter he has no interest in punishing criminals, he just wants an excuse to live the life of a serial killer!

Maybe this colossal oversight on Vogel’s part is meant to set-up the demise of her credibility and drive a wedge between she and the Morgan siblings? I’m not sure but I am starting to itch for a clear path towards the end of this storyline. It is coming quickly and the loose ends just seem to be fraying away too slowly for my tastes.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I was less than thrilled with tonight. I am hoping that things will turn around as we enter the final leg of the season next Sunday.

My Score: C

So let us know what you thought! How ham-fisted is the morality play Masuka seems to be a part of going to get? Has Vogel turned into an anchor that drags down every scene she is in? Do you want to ultimately see Dexter escape somewhere with Hannah? What’s your theory on how this is going to end?!?! Get to commenting below!
