Deleted Post Credit Scene from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Teases Character Return

A lot has been made about the fact that there is no Spidey-centric post-credits stinger after The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  Instead of a tease for the third film or another Spider-Man spinoff, fans were treated to a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past thanks to a deal between Sony and Fox.  However, we now know director Marc Webb did shoot a Spider-Man-relevant scene that would have played mid-credits or post-credits after the conclusion of the film, but for one reason or another Webb and/or Sony decided not to include it as part of the superhero sequel’s theatrical release. This deleted post-credits scene was shot and everything, and now images have surfaced online that reveal just what the scene entailed.  Unsurprisingly, it hinted at the appearance of a certain character in future Spider-Man films.

***** Minor Spoilers Ahead *****

newspidey2photoAn odd aspect of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the fact that Chris Cooper was cast as Oscorp overlord Norman Osborn, yet he only appears in one scene: his death scene.  It’s hard to imagine that Sony would hire an actor of Cooper’s caliber just to appear for a couple of minutes and then disappear forever, and in the scene after his death, we could see Oscorp employees taking a scan of his body.  This signaled that, someway or another, Cooper would reappear as Norman Osborn in a future film.

It appears that Webb and Co. had planned on letting audiences in on the future of Norman Osborn right after the conclusion of the film, as the folks over at Geek Tyrant (via IGN) got their hands on some images from the deleted post-credits sequence that reveal Osborn’s head being kept in a cryogenic freezer in the “Special Projects” area of Oscorp.

rhino-spIn the scene, audiences apparently would have seen the “Man in the Shadows” aka Gustav Fiers (played by Michael Massee) walking up to Osborn’s head and saying, “Wake up old friend.”  This very Futurama like scene indicates that Osborn will possibly play a role in future Spider-Man films, though to what extent is unclear.  It’s tough to fight Spider-Man without, you know, a torso.

It’s unclear why this scene was scrapped, but it would definitely be an interesting thing to see on the eventual Blu-ray, maybe the crazy Electro head collectors edition.  However, given how little of the deleted material from the first film actually showed up on that Blu-ray, I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath.

For now, though, take a look at the images from the deleted scene below.
