Damian Returns (Sort Of) in “Damian: Son of Batman”

If you think being dead means you can’t get a comic minseries, I welcome you to the world of comics, because clearly you must be new! Death doesn’t stop anyone in comics (except Uncle Ben), and this is particularly true when it comes to characters in the Bat-universe, especially Robins. Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and the last character to wear the Robin mantle, was killed in Batman Incorporated #8, and the impact of that death is still making waves across all the Bat-books. But while he’s still very dead in the main canon, that doesn’t mean his story is finished being told.

This October, Damian: Son of Batman brings us a new miniseries dedicated to the most badass of Robins. Written and illustrated by Andy Kubert, who partnered with Grant Morrison to make the iconic Batman #666, this four-part miniseries will show us exactly how Damian would have become Batman after his father, in an alternate future that DC explains is “a possible future that may never be.”

“I had a big affinity for Damian when I drew Batman issue #666 (in 2007),” Kubert told the New York Post. “I really liked that Batman and always wanted to revisit him. Damian is a bit different than the ‘Bruce Wayne’ Batman. Grant Morrison tweaked his character in a way that made it very endearing for me to draw. And to write. Basically, what I’m doing is exploring the path that Damian has taken to become Batman. I think readers will see him in a different light than before.”

The only this permanent about death in comics is that nothing is permanent about death in comics, so all of us who miss Damian still hold out hope that we may see him return. That being said, even if he doesn’t, at least we know we all get one more ride with the coolest Boy Wonder. It’s also exciting that we’ll get to see his rise to the mantle of the Bat, even if it isn’t happening “for real.”

Excited to see Damian at least one more time? Or annoyed that no Robin ever stays dead? Let us know below, while we wait for Damian’s return on October 30th!
