After Pixar set new records this year with Inside Out, we hoped it would move the studio towards more original movies, but they currently have only have one original feature coming our way after this November’s The Good Dinosaur. Director Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) has been working on a Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) film since 2012, and that’s all we’ve known about the picture. But yesterday at D23, Pixar finally gave the film a title and revealed some brief details.

The movie is titled “Coco”, and the logline said the film “is the celebration of a lifetime, where the discovery of a generations-old mystery leads to a most extraordinary and surprising family reunion.”

Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson (Toy Story 3) also released the following coco-d23-lee-unkrich-600x496statements about the movie:

“As artists and filmmakers, we couldn’t help but be drawn to the striking visuals of Dia de los Muertos,” said Unkrich and Anderson. “But it was the celebration’s core themes of family, remembrance and connection across generations that resonated within and truly inspired us. Dia de los Muertos is as singular as the Mexican culture, while at the same time completely universal in its message.

“In our story,” they continued, “the celebration of Dia de los Muertos serves as the perfect backdrop for our main character to ask where he comes from, what his place is within his family, and how families stay woven together across time through the simple act of remembrance.”

Still not a lot of details, but it’s better than the total vacuum we’ve been in for the last three years

Additionally, Unkrich tweeted out a teaser poster for the film, which reveals that it will be released “Fall 2017,” which is surprising. Up until this year, Pixar had released one movie per year. Because they didn’t release a film in 2014, we got two in 2015, and next year will be Finding Dory on its own. However, 2017 boosts the company back to two films since Toy Story 4 is due to open on June 16, 2017. If the company plans to mirror what they’re doing this year, then presumably Coco will be released in November.
