According to Deadline, the CW just penned a development deal with The Mentalist creators/producers, Bruno Heller and Tom Szentgyorgyi, for a new sci-fi series called Red. According to the report, Red is a “neo-Western drama” that will center on humanity’s first efforts at colonizing Mars, thus the Western aspect. In addition to stories about the struggles of forging life in the new frontier, the show will also focus on interpersonal relationships between the settlement’s female sheriff, their resident doctor, and some unnamed criminal.

I don’t know about you, but this sounds like an effort to cash in on the cult status of Firefly, somehow tapping into that fervent and loyal audience. And you know what? It’s freaking working! That description alone has me interested in Red, and I usually cannot stand CW shows.

It’s also heartening that more sci-fi is coming to television outside of Syfy. So many amazing shows have been cut loose on Syfy that I don’t even bother watching any of their programming anymore, lest I become attached to a show that will just get axed. Besides, their shows are pretty terrible.

Thus far, the CW has seen a lot of success with their genre programming (think ArrowSupernaturalThe Vampire Diaries, etc). Hopefully Red lives up to its apparent potential because I’d love for there to be more good sci-fi on TV again. What do you guys think of the news?
