DC Comics’ Superman Unchained series has gone nuclear! The terrorist group known as Ascension has recently launched over one hundred tactical nuclear missiles across the globe. Their targets: all of mankind. With only the Justice League out to save the Earth – and only then a 60% chance of success – will Ascension finally prove to be more than the Man of Steel can handle?

“You can’t always be there for everyone, Superman. You need to start making hard decisions.” – Wraith, Superman Unchained #6

Wraith is past the point of trying to convince Superman to join the team of General Lane and Lois is trapped with the members of Ascension. And if that wasn’t enough to worry about, it appears that even if the big boy blue scout is able to stop the one hundred and nineteen missiles set to destroy the earth, Ascension still has more trouble up their sleeves. Not to mention General Lane and his troops are now swarming the Fortress of Solitude’s doorstep…

Scott Snyder has proven himself to be quite possibly the best asset DC Comics has had in recent years – and his writing is only getting better and better! Superman Unchained #6 begins with a haunting narration by the Man of Steel himself as he describes just how serious the situation at hand is. Just when you think the stakes of the worldwide crisis at hand can’t get any higher, Snyder keeps adding more tension to the stew! There’s no sign of Superman’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor in this issue, a character who Snyder used extremely well in the previous issues. I only hope Luthor’s absence means that there is something extra special in store for the infamous villain in the series’ upcoming conclusion.

To say that Jim Lee is the master of comic book art is an understatement. Superman Unchained #6 is packed page to page, panel to panel, full of some of the best penciling this series has seen to date. Painted by the colors of Alex Sinclair’s masterful hand, Superman Unchained #6 makes for a visual treat for any comic book fan. There are a couple panels with some less-than-his-best inking work by Scott Willaims, but overall, this issue is darn near perfect!

Superman Unchained #6 is an intense page turner that promises readers an action-packed read. Scott Snyder and Jim Lee are at the top of their game, and this series is only getting better and better! With only three issues left before the conclusion, will Superman be able to save all of mankind and will Snyder be able to end the series on a high note? Or will Ascension prove to be too much for both heroes?

Story: 9/10

Art: 8.5/10

Overall: 8.75/10
