Tonight is the spring premiere of the second half of Doctor Who’s seventh season, which is returning with “The Bells of Saint John” as the Doctor begins his search for Clara. In order to herald the start of this new year of Who, BBC America also announced that David Tennant and Billie Piper will be returning to the world of Doctor Who in the 50th Anniversary special. From the press release:

David Tennant and Billie Piper will join current Doctor and companion, Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman, while John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Alien, Harry Potter) will also co-star.

Last seen as the Doctor on January 1, 2010, this will be the first time Tennant has reprised his role as the Tenth Doctor. During his reign as the Time Lord, Tennant appeared in three series as well as several specials. He was first revealed as the Doctor in the 2005 series finale, “The Parting of the Ways.”

Meanwhile Billie Piper, who played companion Rose Tyler for two series following the reboot in 2005, will appear in the show for the first time since featuring in Tennant’s last episode, The End of Time in 2010.

For those of us who miss Tennant (and honestly, who doesn’t?), this will be an exciting return! No doubt the set up will be that Rose and the human version of Tennant’s Doctor somehow manage to return from the alternate universe we last saw them in, or perhaps the Doctor and Clara will find themselves over there? Either way, I can’t wait to see Tennant and Smith come face-to-face. I could do without Rose, but you can’t always get what you want!

Check back on Monday for my review of “The Bells of Saint John,” and catch up on the first five episodes of the season if you haven’t already.
