CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 and AVENGERS 3 & 4 Rumors; New Directors, Civil War Relation, AGE OF ULTRON Fallout and More

Joe and Anthony Russo certainly have their hands full with Captain America 3, especially now that Marvel’s close to closing a deal to recruit another Avenger, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, and things might only get bigger for the brothers.  It’s being reported that after the Russos finish up Captain America 3 that they may move on to direct Avengers 3 and possibly Avengers 4, too.

The story comes from Badass Digest with the outlet claiming that the Russo brothers are currently in talks to direct Avengers 3 and “possibly” Avengers 4 also.  After Captain American: The Winter Solider hit it so big, it makes sense that they’d really be Marvel’s the-avengers-team-image-600x337favorite and Kevin Feige’s top choice to “pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.”

As for Captain America 3, we recently heard rumors that they’re running with the “Civil War” storyline concerning the Superhero Registration Act, which requires anyone with super powers to register with the U.S. government.  Iron Man is pro-registration while Captain America is against it, and it will turn Downey into a full-blown co-star and require him to complete a 30 or 40-day shooting schedule.

Apparently the titles being considered for that one include Captain America: Civil War and Captain America: Fallen Son, one of which could tease a grim end for Cap, which would work if the character really isn’t part of Avengers 3.

Badass goes on to claim that “the fallout of Avengers: Age of Ultron is going to be huge in this movie.”

[Potential spoilers ahead]

avengers-age-of-ultron-concept-art-poster-hi-res1-600x461In fact, Marvel is reportedly approaching Captain America 3 as an Avengers 2.5 of sorts and it may include the new team Cap winds up with at the end of Age of Ultron.  The outlet notes that the team members could change, but supposedly include Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and possibly The Vision.  On top of that, Stark is so bummed that his Ultron project caused such destruction that he retires from the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron, a detail that could serve as a solid transition to his pro-regulation campaign in the new Captain America film.

With all of this inter-connectivity going on, it makes sense that Marvel would want the Russo brothers to return to helm additional films.  Apparently Captain America 3 is going to finish up in a “tough, dark place, with the heroes scattered and defeated,” and that’s where Avengers 3 is going to pick up.  The world will be vulnerable in that movie and in Avengers 4 as well, which is where Thanos could come in.  Badass suggests that he’ll be a prime threat either in Avengers 4 or in a big team-up film, depending on which comes first.

Marvel Phase Two ends with Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.  Ant-Man begins Phase Three on July 17, 2015 and Captain America 3 follows it up on May 6, 2016.
