The first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released tomorrow, and if it’s anything like the footage we saw at Comic-Con this past summer, we’re in for one hell of a treat.  Director Bryan Singer is currently editing the sequel/prequel, but earlier today he took some time away from editing to do a short Q&A on Twitter.  While he noted that tomorrow’s trailer is “primarily a character piece” due to most of the visual effects not being finished, he did offer up some interesting nuggets of info about the film including its tone, the evolution of some of the characters, new mutants (including a Deadpool mention), and a “Blurred Lines” dance break on set.  Here’s a few highlights.

Over on Singer’s Twitter, the director spoke a bit about the film’s tone in relation to the otherX-Men movies:

Q: How would you characterize the tone and style of Days of Future Past?

A: Though there is a great deal of humor, the overall tone is a bit darker than previous films, particularly because of the stakes.

x-men-days-of-future-past-poster-magneto-404x600As for the film’s style, Singer utilized different film formats to capture the various time periods:

Q: Stylistically, First Class echoed the Bond movies of the 60s. Should we expect DoFPto echo 70s cinema in some fashion?

A: Yes, in the colors, some of the style & music. I also used 16 & 8mm footage which I operated myself for some scenes which was fun.

The filmmaker also teased new mutants both in the film and one’s he’d like to use at some point:

Q: How many new X-Men characters are in the new film?

A: A lot – Blink, Bishop, Sunspot, Warpath, Ink, Quicksilver, etc.

Q: Is there any X-Men character that you haven’t used that you would like to?

A: Yeah, Gambit, Deadpool, and a few others I’d rather not mention.

Singer noted that he’s actually ahead of schedule with regards to the editing process on the film:

Q: What scene are you editing right now?

A: I’m tinkering with a piece in the opening that helps set up the story – but I’m in a good place with the cut. A bit ahead of schedule.

x-men-days-of-future-past-poster-professor-x-404x600With regards to the evolution of Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Singer confirmed that the character is rather different inDoFP:

Q: Mystique has been a fun character to see in the movies. What can we expect to see from her in DoFP?

A: She’s a much more hardened kick-ass character than she was in First Class.

And for anyone still doubting whether we’ll get to see the Sentinels in all their glory:

Q: Will we finally get to see the Sentinels in action?

A: Yes. :)

Finally, it appears that not even the hardened male cast of X-Men can resist the pull of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”

Q: What was the funniest moment on set with the entire cast?

A: In between shooting a serious scene on Xavier’s private jet, Michael, Nick, Hugh and James dancing to #BlurredLines #IHaveTheFootage

Check back here tomorrow morning at 6am PT to watch the first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past.  The film opens in 3D on May 23, 2014.
