There’s been loads of buzz about Creed ever since Ryan Coogler hit it big with his feature directorial debut Fruitvale Station last year, but until now, it’s really just amounted to a whole bunch of talk with no sign of the project actually moving forward.  However, that’s just changed courtesy of a report claiming that World Boxing Association champion Andre Ward and British champion boxer Tony Bellew are both in negations to join the cast of the film.

Should their deals go through, they’ll join Michael B. Jordan who’s set to play the grandson of Apollo Creed.  Even though his family would rather not see him box, he’s got loads of potential and winds up being mentored by Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa.

According to THR, should Bellew commit, he’ll play Creed’s primary opponent, “Pretty Ricky Porter,” but there’s no word on who Ward will play in the film.  Creed isn’t expected to go into production in Las Vegas and Philadelphia until January, so we’re looking at at least a year until the film hits theaters, but if you’d like to see what Bellew is capable of far sooner, he’s due to fight Nathan Cleverly on November 22nd.

This is a big one for Coogler.  Fruitvale Station is an exceptional film, but that does put a significant amount of pressure on the guy to impress again.  But I’m hopeful.  Coogler didn’t just snatch up the flashiest project that came his way after Fruitvale.  He did the legwork.  After signing with WME, he immediately dubbed Creed a dream project so the agency set up a meeting between Coogler and Stallone.  Coogler pitched his idea, Stallone approved and then MGM followed suit.
