75 years later, Bill Finger will finally get his due.

DC Comics, which is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Batman all year long, has declared July 23rd to be Batman Day. To mark this special occasion, DC is releasing a special edition of Detective Comics #27, for free. This issue will contain material from the original 1939 Detective Comics, and the one released earlier this year as a part of the New 52.

What’s more important, Bill Finger will receive a cover credit on the issue. Finger is the writer of some of the earliest Batman comics, who forged the real mythos behind the Dark Knight, including the color scheme, the powerless Bruce Wayne, the origin story,  the Batmobile, and Dick Grayson. Due to a confusing and probably ill-thought contract between Finger and Bob Kane, Finger has never been officially identified with a “ created by” credit in any Batman material.

The special free issue contains the original story as well as a update of the story from writer Brad Meltzer and artist Bryan Hitch. The issue also contains work from current Batman scribe Scott Snyder and artist Sean Gordon Murphy. This is a not-to-be-missed issue that will hit comic shops around the world on Batman Day, July 23rd, while supplies last. And remember folks, it’s free.
