Bethesda Says DOOM Will Run at 1080p and 60FPS on Consoles

For those unaware, idTech has been the standard in-house game development engine that’s powered every iteration of DOOM, as well as plenty of other titles from a slew of different studios, like Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. id Software’s forthcoming reboot of perhaps the most influential shooter of all time will feature its newest engine, dubbed idTech 6. Thanks to the new idTech 6 engine, DOOM is going to have the ability to project 1080p visuals and run at 60 frames per second across every single platform on which the game releases.

On top of idTech 6’s impressive ability to provide DOOM with consistent cross-platform performance whether in the title’s multiplayer modes or its rumored 13-hour-long campaign, the engine also lets game artists easily create stellar designs almost instantly. As it happens, Lead Project Programmer Billy Khan doom-1080p-60-fpsspoke about how idTech 6 impacted DOOM and its development process to Bethesda, saying:

“We want players to wonder how DOOM and idTech 6 games can be so visually stunning at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p on all platforms, when other titles cannot even achieve a similar look at 30 frames-per-second. Our goal is to be the best-looking game at 1080p at 60fps.

“idTech 6 allows the artists and designers to quickly decorate the world with fine details. idTech 6’s physically based renderer and dynamic lighting system allows our artists to make our characters and environments more realistic and stunning than ever before.”

With DOOM on track to be an incredibly fast-paced shooter, it’s definitely surprising that id Software’s latest engine will be able to provide such high-quality visuals for the game upon release, but it’s still doom-1080p-60-fps-consolesimportant to take the news with a grain of salt, considering there’s always the potential for visual hang-ups on day one. However, if pre-launch gameplay video is indicative of what the final product will offer, fans should expect ridiculously gory and detailed graphics, as well as an extremely smooth frame rate at almost every turn.

Developers won’t be content to simply make DOOM look pristine, though, as they’re also insistent upon making it a real challenge for gamers. id Software’s Executive Producer, Marty Stratton, even went on record to say that fans should anticipate the difficulty increase to be a demanding, but rewarding experience.

DOOM‘s release date is still a ways off, as it’s set to drop this summer, so id Software still has a solid block of time afforded to it to allow developers to continue to polish the shooter as much as possible. Plus, considering the fact that fans were recently given the run-down on an important, yet ancillary feature in the title’s king of the hill mode, it’s highly likely the studio has even more surprises in store before DOOM finally goes live.

DOOM is set to release on May 13, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
