Benedict Cumberbatch says he is NOT playing Khan in STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS

It’s hard to imagine that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in Star Trek Into Darkness is really John Harrison and not the immensely popular Khan Noonien Singh, but that is exactly what the actor is saying.

Speaking to Access hollywood, Cumberbatch said:

“I play John Harrison who’s a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right,” the Brit said. “He’s somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain. He’s got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathize with the reasons he’s doing what he’s doing — not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes. But it was a great ride, not just because he’s the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it’s hard not to see his point of view at certain points.”

I understand the need to keep things a secret, and Abrams is the master at that, but I am still not buying it. If it comes to pass that Cumberbatch is simply John Harrison then screenwriter Bob Orci will have some explaining to do.  He stated that the villain was a canon character that was featured in previous Trek adventures. The closest we get to a John Harrison in Star Trek canon is an officer from The Original Series whose last name was Harrison, but he hardly had any impact. The statement above sounds like a description for Nero, the Romulan antagonist from the first JJ Abrams Star Trek. I am sure we haven’t heard the last on this topic, but Abrams and company have done an amazing  job whipping the community into a frenzy. I don’t remember the last time there was such a debate over a character in a film. They are walking a tight rope though, they are giving us just enough to want more, but pretty soon they are going to have to give us a couple answers so we don’t get frustrated. Another pitfall would be for them to drag it out too long, leading to a dissatisfying conclusion. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D on May 17, 2013.

    • Hmmmm, why would Benedict Cumberbatch go out of his way to say that he isn\’t playing Khan? Seems more effective to just stay silent rather than say later, \”Just kidding!\”
