Ben Affleck has Written a Solo BATMAN Script

One of the more universal pieces of praises coming out of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been for Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the titular caped crusader, and if you’re holding out hope for Affleck to lead his own standalone Batman movie, we now have a heartening update. Word surfaced last year that Affleck was mulling over the prospect of directing and starring in a standalone Batman feature, developing the idea with DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns. But not only is this standalone Batman film a real possibility, Affleck is apparently handling scriptwriting duties himself, as William Morris Endeavor co-CEO Patrick Whitesell revealed to THR that Affleck has written a script for such a feature.

Indeed, during the interview with THR, Whitesell also revealed exactly how many films Affleck batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-ben-affleckis under contract for with Warner Bros. for their DC Extended Universe:

“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.”

Don’t forget, while Affleck was snubbed for a Best Director nod for Argo, he has two Oscars—one for co-writing Good Will Hunting and a Best Picture award for Argo—so while he’s most famous as an onscreen persona, Affleck’s no slouch when it comes to screenwriting. He also penned the scripts for Gone Baby Gone and The Town, as well as his next directorial feature Live by Night, which recently completed production and finds Affleck playing a Prohibition-era bootlegger.

It’s possible that Affleck is still working out the kinks with a potential Batman movie, so while

he’s written a script, that doesn’t mean the film is ready to go. He also has a very busy schedule ahead of him, with Justice League set to begin filming in two weeks, after which he’s set to devote his attention to post-production on Live by Night ahead of that film’s October 2017 release date. However, since Justice League Part Two isn’t slated for release until 2019 and will be shot separately from the first Justice League movie, it’s possible Affleck could turn his attention to directing and starring in a solo Batman film sometime next year.

While Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce a new Batman movie as part of its slate of DC interconnected films, the truth is the studio would love nothing more than to have Affleck—one of its most valued filmmakers—helming a new Batman film. So the onus, one imagines, is on Affleck as to whether he wants to direct a new Batman movie himself in the near future. As a big fan of Affleck’s work both in front of and behind the camera, and as someone eager to see what he could bring to a spectacle-driven tentpole, I for one hope he moves forward with this idea.
