Battle Royale coming to the CW?

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 11:04 pm by David "Snackbar" Edmundson

The ultra violent 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale may be coming to the CW as the network is inquiring about the rights to the film.  For those not familiar with Battle Royale, in a dystopian future students are sent to a secluded location to fight until only one is left alive.  Sound familiar?  There have been more than a few comparisons over the last couple years to The Hunger Games, with a lot of people calling Suzanne Collins’ novels a direct plagiarism of Battle Royale.  I don’t subscribe to most of the rabble rousing though; after all before Battle Royale, there was The Running Man, and before that Death Race, and so on and so forth.

With the success of The Hunger Games, the CW is obviously looking to market this to The Hunger Games market.  Personally I don’t see how such an ultra violent movie/book could survive on a network.  But anything that raises more awareness for a fun film like Battle Royale is good by me.

What do you think?  Good idea, or will they tween up a great story?

Pass. They can't keep up with the death and gore from the film.

    • I couldn't care less. The Hunger Games isn't really very good, so I can't imagine that a Hollywood re-imagining of Battle Royale would be any better, especially if it's on the CW. I loved Takami's novel, and I feel like America would just butcher it (never seen the movie).

If HBO did a remake, though, then I might be interested.
