Batman: Zero Year to Show how a Bat Gets His Wings

When DC announced the New 52, it was clear that while the major factors would remain the same, several details would change regarding the origin stories of our favorite heroes. These details have slowly trickled out for many of these heroes, but few have been revealed in the case of Batman.

Starting with Batman #21, all that is going to change.

Across eleven issues, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will pull back the curtains to reveal all the ways Batman garnered the skills he needed to become the Dark Knight in Batman: Zero Year. Snyder went out of his way when talking to the Associated Press to ensure Bat-fans that this wasn’t going to undo either the origin we all know, or widely-embraced stories like Batman Year One.

“It’s not ‘let’s redo the origin.’ It’s time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52,” said Snyder. “We tried to preserve as much of Batman’s history as we could and keep what we could of this history intact. It’s ‘The Zero Year,’ the one that no one has told the story of before. We see how Bruce became the Batman, built the cave, faced off with his first super villain … It’s time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in The New 52. It builds up the mythology.”

Bat-fans widely agree that what Snyder and Capullo have done for the current state of Batman has been nothing short of revolutionary; over the next year, we’ll now get to see them work that magic on his past as well.
