Bates Motel- “Trust Me” Review

Posted on April 9, 2013 at 9:58 pm by Jess Hicks

Last night’s episode of Bates Motel shed some light on just how strange things are getting in this quiet little town. As always stop reading now if you wish to remain spoiler free! So let’s break it down!

Norma’s Secrets

Good lord does this woman have a lot of them! The biggest one revealed last night was that Norma has been aware of Norman’s hallucinations and black outs. Of course last week we saw Norman talking to a phantom version of his mother and we also learned he doesn’t remember attacking his brother. What is most intriguing about this is that Norma is clearly aware so I wonder what other things he has “done” that his mother knows about. My bet is that he somehow was responsible for his abusive father’s death, though who could blame him?

Of course her other secret about killing her attacker has come to pay her back. It seems Deputy Shelby isn’t the nicest guy in the world, but we’ll get to that. At the end of the episode Norma is arrested for murder but I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out if anything comes of it. Norman can’t be separated from his mother for long.

The Black Sheep

Dylan Bates, Norma’s eldest son, is clearly the black sheep of his crazy family. However, being the black sheep actually makes him the sanest person in town. Dylan has some flaws, sure, but down deep he actually really cares about his brother. He even gets Norman to go visit the girl he is crushing on even though “mother” does not approve.

Dylan is interesting because we all want him to help Norman but if the creators are following the original story even in the slightest way we all know Norman doesn’t appear to have a brother. Essentially, we are watching this guy do everything he can to help but we know his eventual demise is near. Norman even tells his brother of the murder so that is sure to be the end of Dylan when Norma finds out. But who will take him out? Norma or Norman?

Two Girls, One Norman

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, when the hell did Norman become such a ladies’ man? I mean really, the Norman we know he will eventually become can barely look a woman in the eye let alone date them.

For me the obvious choice is sickly Emma but I know that will just end in tears. Unfortunately popular Bradley seems to be the apple of Norman’s eye. I’m starting to wonder if there is a back story with Bradley, something with her seems off. Not saying the popular girl and geeky guy can’t be together, she just seems…off.

Deputy Hott Stuff

Last week Norman broke into Shelby’s house to get the belt of his mother’s murder, what he found was a girl chained up in the basement. We think. Honestly, it’s kind of hard to know if what Norman saw was actually there or not. But if it wasn’t there then where did Norman get the scratches on his ankle? Of course delusional people are no strangers to hurting themselves but still, was she there?

This gives us more light on the diary that Norman found and the discovery of the sex trade going on in the town. To me the diary looked kind of old so maybe the sex trade is something that happened in the past, and that cabin was pretty decrepit. Then there is the basement that Norma saw, one covered in boxes and junk like any basement. Why would Shelby completely change everything over night when he didn’t even know Norman was in his house?

Closing Thoughts & Sidebars

  • “I killed the crap out of him!” is one of my favorite quotes of all time.
  • I really hope Norman takes out his brother because I think it would just send him spiraling back into his mother’s arms where we want him.
  • I’m having a really hard time hating Norma, I think we should based on who she is but there is just so much sympathy that goes along with her character.

Next week’s episode looks like it will bring out the vicious sides of both Norma and Norman. I’m definitely looking forward to it and I hope you’ll join me next week!

Bates Motel episode 4, “Trust Me” aired on April 8th, 2013 on A&E 10/9c.
