Well it’s about time! The news is a few days old, but Netflix has finally confirmed that Arrested Development is coming back to your television sets in May with 14 all new episodes! While there isn’t a premiere date set, TechCrunch is repeating rumors (and I guess I am too!) that the show will return on May 4th. At the 2013 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour last Wednesday, creator Mitch Hurwitz also confirmed that all 14 episodes will be released at once, so we won’t have to wait week to week to see what’s going on with our favorite dysfunctional family.

In case you haven’t been keeping up with the news, all the original cast members signed on to be a part of the new Arrested Development show, and each episode is slated to follow one of the characters, updating us on what the Bluths have been up to in the time that we’ve missed them. As such, the new episodes won’t be exactly like the series was originally, but Hurwitz has been very upfront about managing fan expectations. “We had to decide early on not to be precious about it…We have to remember that the spirit of this was to surprise fans with something they didn’t see coming.”

Another interesting development is that Michael Cera joined the writer’s room and “quickly became indispensable” according to the LA Times’ reporting of the TCA event. Considering the fact that the show gave him his start, and no doubt had a huge impact on his sense of humor as a young man, I’m interested to see what influence he had on the development of the show.

No matter what the show ends up being like, it’s a good move for Netflix (and TV in general), especially since online streaming sites are becoming more and more prevalent with the rise of Amazon Instant Watch. Amazon is clearly gunning for Netflix’s audience, and they carry almost the exact same inventory; so Netflix needs to set itself apart quickly in order to head off its competitor. Funnily enough, I had cancelled my Netflix subscription several months ago because I already have Amazon Prime (and thus access to Instant Watch); but this news that Arrested Development is returning soon will definitely compel me to reinstate my account.

I for one am looking forward to seeing more of this incredibly funny and iconic show, as well as challenging Justin to quote-offs of hilarious Gob one-liners. I doubt we’ll hear the words, “I’ve made a huge mistake.”

What are you guys looking forward to the most when Arrested Development returns? What are your favorite lines from the show? Tell us in the comments!
