‘Aquaman’ Movie Gets Dueling Writers

Much ado has been made about Warner Bros semi-unveiling of a massive list of upcoming movies based on the DC Universe. There are nine films on the list, due between 2016 and 2020, and while all of them were left untitled, we know that one of them will be based on the aquatic adventures of the Justice League’s Aquaman.

In an attempt to both solidify a date and get the best product possible, Warner Bros has announced that two writers will be given a chance to produce a script, each doing so separately in a competition I can’t help but hope also requires them to write underwater. The competition will take place between Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Castle) and Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire).

As a huge fan and defender of Aquaman, I can only hope this process brings us the very best portrayal of the character possible. If anything, I’m hoping for a combination of the two. Aquaman deserves plenty of the over-the-top battles that Johnstad certainly has experience writing, but is also far wittier than many give him credit for, which leaves me hoping for some of Beall’s Castle-style repartee as well.

With Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) all but confirmed as the titular character, and now some big name writers behind the script(s), I continue to be cautiously optimistic that we’re going to get a film that will teach the world what many of us already know – Aquaman is a tried-and-true badass.

A bit of evidence of Aquaman's badass-itude for the non-believers.
