Anticipated Gaming 2013

Posted on December 30, 2012 at 12:37 pm by Stephen Janes

So let’s talk about some of the things that we are hoping to see in the upcoming year. The year 2013 looks to be pretty exciting in regards to gaming, and here I want to briefly touch up on what you should be paying attention to. As with the previous articles, this is not an ordered list but rather just a compilation of games, news items and what-have-you.

Tomb Raider

I was always a fan of the Tomb Raider franchise, although I haven’t played every single game released starring Lara Croft. The reboot in the franchise looks fantastic, taking a page from the Uncharted franchise in realism and amazing graphics. Instead of dealing with a mature and seasoned Lara Croft, we get a look at her origin story ; how she became an infamous Tomb Raider and how she became such a survivalist. This reboot looks very interesting and should usher in a new level of excitement for those who are long-time fans of Tomb Raider and introduce Lara Croft to a new audience.

Metal Gear Rising Revengance

The Metal Gear Solid franchise has always been a stellar gift to the video game players. I really enjoyed the “tactical stealth espionage” action and I really enjoyed the story, even though I couldn’t understand half of what was happening. The upcoming title Metal Gear Rising Revengance is none of that. It’s a fast-paced, sword slinging action title starring a cyborg Raiden after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Despite the ridiculous double-named title, MG Rising Revengance looks like a lot of fun for being different. I know a lot of die-hard fans will write this off as not a true Metal Gear Solid sequel, but give it a chance anyway.

Movies Based on Video Games

In the coming year, fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and the Splinter Cell games should be treated to a movie adaption, in addition to more information about a Metal Gear Solid movie that still is pretty unknown. With their respective production companies on-board to help out with the movie adaptions, 2013 looks to be pretty impressive for video game movies. I’m more excited for the Assassin‘s Creed movie, but it sounds like it might get pushed back to 2014. Regardless, we should see tons of promotional photos and perhaps even a few trailers for the titles mentioned above (photo shown is not from upcoming movie).

Next-Gen Consoles

Xbox 720

2013 looks like it will be the year we are introduced to new consoles. Sure, we already have entered the next-generation with the WiiU, but the Xbox 720/Durango should be officially announced alongside the Playstation 4/Orbis. What new features and specifications these consoles bring is anybody’s guess, but I’m sure we’ll have a beter idea in the coming months, especially with each company having developer kits out in the open.  It will be great to see what the next generation offers.

Well Geeks, I’m out of information to share with you all. It’s your turn to sound off in the comments; what are you hotly anticipating next year?

    • All good things. I'm actually looking forward to Aliens: Colonial Marines. We played it at both E3 and PAX and all of us were blown away. Bioshock Infinite and Dead Space 3 also look amazing. Oh let's not forget GTA V and GoW: Ascension. Oy! 2013 is going to be a great year for games.

It always cracks me up how amazing games are at the end of a console's life-cycle. The devs push the system to the max and deliver phenomenal graphics, sound, and gameplay. I can't wait!

    • It sucks that the quality of games improves toward the end of a consoles cycle, but then again it makes sense. I remember when God of War II was released how great it was, only to be disappointed that everybody was going PS3 at that point, although Sony likes to keep their consoles alive for as long as possible.
