Doctor Who Predictions – An Older Doctor? Yes Please!

Posted on August 3, 2013 at 6:52 pm by Jess Hicks

The big Doctor Who reveal is only hours away, and I couldn’t be more excited. There’s been a lot of talk about who should be the next Doctor, and the latest in the running is Peter Capaldi. Now, I had to look up who he was because I had no idea he existed until several days ago. I discovered a few things about this mystery man: first, he’s Scottish, which is okay in my book because David Tennant is Scottish and well…David Tennant. Second, he isn’t all that mysterious. He’s actually pretty well known as a foul mouthed “spin doctor” (aka the person who fixes political catastrophes) on the British show In the Thick of It. Thirdly, and this is the “big” one: he’s 55 years old.

Peter Capaldi

The Doctor is an old soul but has not been played by an actor over 50 since it’s original run and quite frankly, I would like to see this happen. And here’s why!

  • I love the cute quirky English guys they have had but the whole “Doctor as a love interest” bit is getting a bit stale. There will never be another “Rose and the Doctor” relationship so why try and replicate it? Instead I would like to see the Doctor as father figure or something like it.
  • Having an older actor would be a great way to give the original fans a reminder of the original series. It’s no secret that the show has changed a bit and I think older fans would appreciate an older Doctor.
  • An older Doctor might mean an angrier/rougher Doctor and I am A-OK with that. I am tired of the naïveté. I want a no holds bar, hot under the collar Doctor. Not that a younger person couldn’t do it that way, I just think an older actor would be a better fit.

I know most people will be put off by an older doctor at first, but I think this could be a really great thing for the series. Of course, this is all just speculation and I could totally be wrong. All I’m saying is the Doctor doesn’t have to be a goofy looking young English guy, the Doctor could be literally anything, and I think it’s time for something a little different. Who do you guys want the next Doctor to be?

    • No one ever likes the new Doctor when he’s first introduced, but they warm up to him eventually. Matt Smith was my first Doctor, so I’m interested to see how I feel about a new guy taking up the mantle!

If they send Matt off the way they sent David off, you may hate the new Doctor! I know I did! Haha! But you’re right, I eventually warmed up to him. Eventually.
An older Doctor could be fun though. The last 3 Doctors were each about 10 years younger than the previous. Either way, I’m trying to keep an open mind!

        • Why didn’t you like Tennant’s send off? Because it was drawn out? I feel like they had to do it that way because he needed a proper farewell 🙁

          • Jennifer

You misunderstood me. I loved his send off! Every time I watch it, I cry. It was so heartwarming it made me miss him more. Since I missed him so much, the new Doctor didn’t have a chance!! It took me a long time to embrace Matt Smith.

            • Randy

I agree! The long heart-wrenching send off made me love Tennant even more, and really made it difficult for me to accept Matt Smith as the beloved Doctor. As a result, I’ve always harbored a certain disdain for Smith Not for replacing Tennant, but for his overall flippant portrayal. I never found myself caring for him.

      Good prediction!!
